Does Genesis Hint At A Prior Catastrophic Event On Earth?

There are moments in Scripture that feel like standing on the edge of something vast and mysterious — words so simple, yet so deep, that they seem to echo far beyond what we first understand.

“The earth was without form and void…” (Genesis 1:2, ESV-CE).

What does this mean?

Was it simply the beginning of creation unfolding — or could it hint at something more dramatic, more hidden, more profound?

As we reflect together, we step into a mystery that draws us into awe — a mystery of creation, of possible catastrophe, of angelic conflict, and ultimately, of God’s power to bring order from chaos and light from darkness.

Mental Health: Attending Mass

Disclaimer at end of this blog post.

In recent years, the subject of mental health has rightly moved from the margins into the centre of our shared concern.

Anxiety, depression, loneliness, and emotional exhaustion are no longer hidden struggles for many among us.

As people of faith, we are called to respond not only with compassion, but with wisdom – recognising both the importance of proper care and the profound gift of spiritual support.

Among these supports, one sacred and often overlooked source of peace is the reverent and prayerful attendance at Holy Mass.

When is the 23rd Psalm not the 23rd Psalm?

Many of us can recite the 23rd Psalm almost without thinking. "The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want." It is woven into our prayer lives, spoken at funerals, whispered at bedsides, and returned to in moments of fear or uncertainty. It feels familiar, steady, and timeless. And yet, depending on which Bible we open, the 23rd Psalm may not actually be Psalm 23 at all.

“As his custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day.” (Luke 4:16, RSV-CE)

There is something quietly powerful about a habit – especially one rooted in faith.

Long before grand acts of holiness or visible works of charity, there are simple, steady choices that shape the soul.

One of these is the act of gathering for worship. In a world filled with distractions and shifting priorities, we are invited to rediscover the deep spiritual significance of something that may seem ordinary – the faithful practice of coming before God together.
