Hidden Treasures of Scripture - The Gift That Heaven Notices

Some of the most precious treasures in Scripture are hidden in moments that could easily be overlooked.

The Gospel does not always reveal God’s glory through great crowds, powerful rulers, or dramatic events.

Sometimes the deepest lessons are found in a quiet person, a simple action, or a gift that appears insignificant to the eyes of the world.

In the Temple, Jesus noticed a poor widow offering two small coins. Many people would have missed her. Her gift was tiny compared with the large offerings of others, yet Jesus revealed that Heaven measured her generosity in a completely different way.

This hidden treasure reminds us that God sees beyond what the world sees. He notices the prayers offered in silence, the kindness given without recognition, and the sacrifices made with love. Nothing offered to God with a sincere heart is ever too small.

The Hidden Treasure of the Widow’s Offering

The Gospel of Mark introduces us to a simple but powerful moment in the life of Jesus:

“Jesus sat down opposite the treasury and watched the people putting money into the offering box. Many rich people put in large sums. And a poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which make a penny.”
(Mark 12:41 – 42, ESV – CE)

At first, this may seem like an ordinary scene. People are giving their offerings at the Temple, and Jesus is watching. Yet the hidden treasure is found in what Jesus notices.

He does not focus on the largest gift.

He does not praise the person who gives the most.

Instead, His attention turns towards someone who appears insignificant in the eyes of society.

The widow.

She gives only two small coins. Human judgement might suggest that her offering is worth very little. Compared with the wealthy people who gave large amounts, her contribution seems almost invisible.

However, Jesus sees something that others cannot see.

“Truly, I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the offering box.”
(Mark 12:43, ESV – CE)

Why does Jesus say this?

Because God does not measure gifts by their outward appearance. He looks at the love, trust, and sacrifice behind them.

God Sees the Heart

This is one of the great hidden treasures of Scripture: God sees the heart before He sees the action.

The world often values what is impressive. We are surrounded by messages telling us that success comes through achievement, recognition, possessions, and influence. It can become easy for us to believe that only great things matter.

Yet the widow teaches us something different.

A small act of kindness can carry great love.

A quiet prayer can bring great grace.

A hidden sacrifice can be precious in God’s eyes.

The widow did not simply place two coins into the treasury. She placed her trust in God.

“She out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on.”
(Mark 12:44, ESV – CE)

Her offering was not valuable because of its size. It was valuable because it came from a heart completely given to God.

The Treasure of Trust

The widow’s story invites us to reflect on what we offer to the Lord.

God does not ask us to compare our lives with others. Comparison can leave us feeling either proud or discouraged. Someone else may appear to have greater gifts, more opportunities, or a more visible role, but God does not ask us to offer someone else’s life.

He asks us to offer our own.

The widow gave what she had.

That was enough.

This truth appears throughout Scripture. When Elijah met the widow of Zarephath, she had only a small amount of flour and oil remaining during a time of famine. Yet through faith and trust, she shared what little she had.

“And she went and did as Elijah said. And she and he and her household ate for many days.”
(1 Kings 17:15, ESV – CE)

Two widows, separated by centuries, reveal the same spiritual treasure. God is not limited by what appears small. When something is placed in His hands with faith, He can use it in ways beyond our understanding.

The Hidden Treasure of Ordinary Faithfulness

Many of us may never perform actions that attract the attention of the world. We may not stand before crowds, write books, or achieve things that are publicly celebrated.

Yet God sees the hidden moments.

He sees the person who quietly prays for others.

He sees the person who continues to show kindness despite their own struggles.

He sees the person who forgives when forgiveness is difficult.

He sees the person who faithfully attends Mass, receives the sacraments, and seeks to grow closer to Him day after day.

These things may seem ordinary, but in God’s eyes they are treasures.

The widow reminds us that holiness is not always found in extraordinary circumstances. Often, it grows through ordinary faithfulness offered with extraordinary love.

A Lesson from the Saints

Many saints discovered this hidden treasure of giving everything to God, even when they had little in the eyes of the world.

Josephine Bakhita shows us how God can transform suffering, humility, and small acts of love into a beautiful witness of faith.

Born in Sudan, Saint Josephine Bakhita experienced great suffering after being taken from her family as a child and sold into slavery. Her early life was marked by hardship and fear, yet God slowly led her towards the freedom and dignity found in Christ.

After discovering the love of God, she devoted her life to serving others as a Canossian sister. Her holiness was not built upon worldly success or recognition. It was found in simple daily acts of prayer, patience, kindness, and forgiveness.

Saint Josephine Bakhita reminds us that what the world overlooks, God treasures.

Like the widow in the Temple, she offered what she had. She offered her trust, her love, and her life. Through those humble offerings, God revealed the beauty of a soul completely surrendered to Him.

Discovering Hidden Treasures Around Us

The story of the widow’s offering encourages us to look differently at our own lives.

Perhaps we sometimes underestimate the good we do.

Perhaps we wonder whether our prayers really make a difference.

Perhaps we think our contribution is too small.

The Gospel tells us otherwise.

Every act of love matters.

Every prayer matters.

Every moment when we choose goodness over selfishness matters.

God does not overlook the things that others ignore.

A smile given to someone who is lonely.

A word of encouragement to someone struggling.

A prayer offered for someone who has no one praying for them.

A sacrifice made quietly and lovingly.

These are hidden treasures that Heaven sees.

A Treasure Hidden in Prayer

Prayer itself can sometimes feel small. We may feel that our words are not beautiful enough or that our prayers are not worthy.

However, Scripture reminds us that God listens to the humble heart.

“The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.”
(Psalm 34:18, ESV – CE)

God does not need perfect words. He desires honest hearts.

The widow’s offering was simple.

Our prayers may also be simple.

Yet when they are offered with love, they become precious gifts to God.

Weekly Challenge / Takeaway

This week, let us look for hidden treasures.

Let us notice the quiet goodness around us.

Let us offer one small act each day – a prayer, a kindness, a sacrifice, or a moment of patience – and place it into God’s hands.

Let us remember that Heaven does not measure as the world measures.

What appears small to us may be a great treasure to God.

A Prayer to Our Lady of Lourdes

Our Lady of Lourdes, loving Mother, help us to recognise the hidden treasures of God’s grace in our daily lives.

Teach us to trust as you trusted, to serve as you served, and to offer our hearts generously to your Son.

When we feel that our gifts are too small, remind us that God sees every act of love and every prayer offered in faith.

Pray for us, Our Lady of Lourdes, that we may grow closer to Jesus and discover the joy of giving ourselves completely to Him.

Amen.

A Prayer for all who read this blog post and also for all who never will.

Lord Jesus Christ, open our eyes to the treasures that the world often misses.

Help us to remember that no act of love is too small, no prayer is unheard, and no sacrifice offered to You is forgotten.

Strengthen those who feel unnoticed. Comfort those who believe they have little to offer. Teach us to give with humble and trusting hearts.

May we follow the example of the widow in the Temple and offer our lives to You with love.

Bless all who read these words and all who never will. Draw every heart closer to Your mercy and peace.

Amen.

Final Prayer

Lord, teach us to give with love,
And trust Your wisdom from above.
When gifts seem small and hearts feel weak,
Remind us of the grace we seek.

The quiet prayers that no one knows,
The hidden kindness gently grows.
For You can see what eyes cannot,
And cherish every loving thought.

May we give all that we can bring,
Our hearts, our hopes, our everything.
Until we stand before Your light,
Guide us through every day and night.

Amen.
