I Watched Him Set Off For The Wilderness

I Watched Him Set Off For The Wilderness

I watched Him leave at break of day,
No word of parting, none to say.
His eyes held depths I could not see,
A silent call to destiny.

He spoke no reason, gave no sign,
Nor told me of some grand design.
Yet in my heart, I knew the weight -
The grief for Joseph, cruel fate.

For Joseph, his father had passed away,
Just one short week before that day.
And though His face was calm, serene,
I knew His soul still wept unseen.

To solitude He now must go,
Through desert winds, through sun and woe.
For forty days, for forty nights,
A test of faith, a trial of might.

I laboured with Him, side by side,
Through sweat and toil, through craft and pride.
His hands, so strong, so deft, so true,
Shaped wood with skill, as builders do.

But now He walks a path unknown,
A fate He faces all alone.
I do not know if He’ll return,
Or if the wild will see Him burn.

Yet in my heart, He lingers near,
My friend, my work mate, ever dear.
I’ll miss His laugh, His steady hand,
The warmth that made our labour grand.

So go, dear friend, embrace the night,
May courage guide, may truth be light.
And when the wilderness is through,
Come home to us, renewed and true.
