Readers of this blog here here at The 24/7 Catholic blog will know that I often link to Bible Gateway when quoting or referencing Scripture.
It has long been one of the most popular online resources for Catholics and other Christians, providing free access to multiple translations of the Bible, search tools, and even daily devotionals.
However, as of now, Bible Gateway is currently unavailable to consumers in the United Kingdom and the European Union. If you try to click through any old links in my past blog posts, you will sadly find that they no longer work.
According to Bible Gateway’s official announcement (see: Bible Gateway):
-
“Bible Gateway is currently unavailable to consumers in the United Kingdom and European Union due to technical issues. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience.”
-
Those who have a Bible Gateway Plus subscription should automatically receive a refund by 15 September 2025. If not, users are encouraged to contact Customer Service.
-
Unfortunately, all account data and saved content (such as notes and progress) will no longer be accessible.
-
There is no fixed date for when Bible Gateway will return in the UK or EU, but they are “working on a new solution.”
This is undoubtedly disappointing news, especially for those of us who found Bible Gateway to be a reliable and easy-to-use Scripture tool.
What Can We Do in the Meantime?
Although Bible Gateway is down, there are still plenty of excellent alternatives for Catholics in the UK. Here are some recommended resources you may find helpful:

Physical Bibles – Sometimes the best option! The Revised Standard Version – Catholic Edition (RSV-CE) is my personal favourite for study and prayer.
A Spiritual Reflection
This development also reminds us of something deeper: our faith does not depend on digital platforms. As convenient as they are, our connection with God’s Word should never be limited to a website or an app.
Scripture is living and active (cf. Hebrews 4:12), and it continues to nourish us whether read from a screen, proclaimed at Mass, or held in our hands as a beloved book.
If you have been in the habit of using Bible Gateway daily, perhaps now is a chance to strengthen the discipline of keeping a physical Bible nearby for prayer, reflection, and study.
Moving Forward
So, as a reminder, links on previous posts won't now work if you're reading this blog here in the UK, and from now on I'll be using alternative Bible verse sources.
